Hit Squad

From the Annecy Animation Festival, Warner Bros. Animation has revealed that its Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe team is developing a “Hit Squad” animated series based on the work of iconic British producer Gerry Anderson. The show is being developed with a team at Anderson Entertainment, led by Gerry’s son Jamie.

The show’s official description reads: “From the world of Gerry Anderson, ‘Hit Squad’ is an espionage action-comedy. Set in 1990s London, the series follows an international team of talented spies hellbent on putting death before dishonour as they battle the murky world of hidden foes and dangerous villains. This full puppet show is next generation Supermarionation for an adult audience.”

Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe is producing “Hit Squad” with Warner Bros. Animation, Mr Morris Productions and Anderson Entertainment. The project is being executive produced by Jamie Anderson and directed by veteran director Darren Walsh, whose eclectic credits include “Lego City Adventures,” “Angry Kid” (voicing and directing) and “Shawn the Sheep.” Emmy-winning “Black Mirror” producer Russel McLean is producing.

Gerry Anderson was a pioneering British TV and film producer best known for his innovative work with marionettes and his unique style, which he famously dubbed Supermarionation. Anderson gained wide acclaim in the 1960s with a string of groundbreaking sci-fi series that pushed the boundaries of children’s programming at the time. His most iconic creation, 1965’s “Thunderbirds,” combined futuristic storytelling with intricate models and was an enduring hit in the U.K. and abroad, often referenced, spoofed and honored by other artists in the decades since.
